Tough Mudder Tomorrow

I signed up 7 months ago. The Tough Mudder Wisconsin starts tomorrow. I'm crazyI'm sure of it. Just a few years ago I could barely finish a lap. And now look at me. I've run myself to insanity.

Those are my shoes. Under Armour calls their color Midnight Blue. I'd sooner call it Blue Bubblegum Snow-cone. But the color doesn't matterno matter how ridiculous it is, because they feel fantastic. They will look much better covered in mud.

I've only cared about my own fitness for these past 5 years. Now it's time for this great physical test called Tough Mudder, this test of mental grit, to see how well my training has paid off.

The weather forecast is 69 F with a chance of storms. [happy face]

This will be fun.

The Visual Thesaurus is Pretty Cool

And Thinkmap, Inc., the people who developed it, should be noted for their outstanding customer service.

It's a great, simple-to-use program that shows you synonyms and associations between words so that your writing won't be so monochromatic. For instance, I can type in the word "stupid" and receive 50 results to use as insults or pejoratives. Every writer (or even people who hate writing, but have to) can benefit from using this tool.

I was having trouble getting the Visual Thesaurus onto my new PC, because I purchased the CD ROM back when Windows XP reigned. I told Support about my problem, and after going back and forth maybe 1 too many times they kindly set me up with the latest version.

Long Overdue New Computer (Review)

I've needed an upgrade for the past couple of years. A good excuse for me to upgrade was that my old computer gave up the ghost.

My new laptop is a Samsung 7 Series. It packs a punch, and I like it. The graphics and the screen are not overly impressive (still very sharp), but I won't be doing anything major with graphics, and the laptop monitor will be secondary in a dual monitor setup.

My gripes:

  • Battery is housed inside the chassis, which makes replacement difficult.
  • HDD is only 5400 rpm (a 7200 rpm would have been nice, especially since an SSD is out of my price range at the moment).
  • The hard drive partitioning software (for system backup) that runs only once on initial startup took half the hard disk space because I chose the automatic option. I had to fix it manually.

My Likes:

  • Solid construction, and the keyboard doesn't give.
  • Good battery life (4-ish hours doing simple things).
  • Comes with minimal bloatware that is easy to uninstall.
  • Intel i7 processor
  • Matte display
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Samsung has a nifty little program called Easy Software Manager that downloads necessary things like drivers (In case you re-install your operating system).
Oh, and, cosmetically, it's terrific.

CrossFit in Waunakee

I've been interning this semester in Madison, WI. If I was to temporarily relocate to Waunakee, I had to find a gym. The search results yeilded a bunch of run-of-the-mill type places and also CrossFit Farmland, a page that I kept visiting for a  week.

I had never before heard of CrossFit, then one of the coaches (trainers, essentially, if you're not familiar with CrossFit) met with me and led me through a free intro workout. My ass had been kicked. My personal fitness would never be the same.

At CrossFit Farmland we are prided on our strength training through functunal movements. That means that we get prescribed real squats with a barbell and olympic lifts that use the entire body. Gone are the days that I think stepping into a machine that works a single msucle group at a time will suffice.

The coaches and members at the Farmland are all VERY supportive The coaches teach you step-by-step and encourage you to do better each and every time. And they help you modify anything you might be doing improperly. If you're unfamiliar with CrossFit, we are prescribed WODs (Workouts of the day) where members come in at the scheduled WOD times that suit their own schedule. We workout together as a group, and encourage each other whenever we can spare the breath.

CrossFit Farmland is something probably better. Go here to get fitter.

Bereft of my computer

I type this with my two thumbs upon my gen 1 iPod touch. My computer of 5 years is no more. Time to get a better one. I'm distraught, and I have no idea what to do without it. More to follow.

SOPA 2.0. Oh, Hell No.

They're taking another crack at censoring our internet? I just got the email today that the Obama administration recently sent a letter to congress voicing support of SOPA.

*Facepalm*

I thought we had finished this.

Tough Call. But, Please, Not McDonald's

I saw a billboard of McDonald's fries and a Coke looking very happy together (if it's even possible food can show emotion [smiley face pancakes excluded]).
It takes some marketing to make empty starch, fat, and sugar seem appealing to even me.

My New Pseudonym

My new pseudonym came to me by mondegreen (Which is one thing misheard for another). I was pretty new at CrossFit Farmland when a lady in slightly less-good-of-shape-than-I pointed to me and said to the coach, "You expect me to do what he's doing? Look at the shape he's in." I misheard that last part for J.P. Zen.

And considering that my first two initials are J.P., I thought it would be cool to roll with it. Now I get called that much of the time at the gym.

Kinda fun? Yes.

My Past 2 Days

Tuesday:
Sore from dead-lifts. Not too big a deal.
Woke up too early, and walked around all day not knowing where I was.
Helped out at biometric screenings. Not very eventful.
Received parking citation.

Wednesday:
My boss made my parking citation go away.
Taught Qigong.
Attended Wellness meeting.
Drafted Wellness survey.
My coach at CrossFit kicked my ass.

Wednesday was pretty damn awesome.
Now it's time to sleep like a coma patient.

Don't let them break the internet.

Has everybody and their brother posted about this? Yes. So I'm being redundant, but I don't want a broken internet. Please watch the video.
